Due to national unrest in 1908, Ding Liu-mei's father moved the family from Fujian, China, to Malaysia. It wasn't until 1937 that he brought his brother's family to Malaysia. He sent his children and grandchildren to study traditional Chinese medicine in keeping with the family tradition. These included his daughter, Ding Liu-mei, his son, Ding Wen-qi, and his grandchildren, Kiu Zhi-hua and Kiu Chang-fu.
